mom and three daughters

In need of ideas for fun things to do with your kids? Here are some mommy-and-me activities you can do in Cache Valley or in your own home.

  1. Cook-off

If you have several kids, here is a fun family activity.

  • Assign a judge or judges. It’s up to you whether they can cook.
  • Divide into teams, or if you have a smaller family, it’s just as fun to compete individually.
  • Choose an ingredient everyone has to use in their recipe (This adds a challenge to the game).
  • Set a time limit that includes preparation, cooking and plating. The time can be based on the size of the group or the age of the kids.
  1. Craft Day

Crafts can get messy! Try laying old newspaper or a cheap tablecloth on the table for easy clean-up. Go to a craft store near you for inspirations on crafts to make with your kids.

  1. Day Together

Plan a few hours during the day where you spend time with one of your kids. Ask them what they want to do, or give them a few options to choose from, and go out and have fun.

If you have several children, it can be difficult to find time for one-on-one visits. Try setting dates for personal time with them. Depending on your schedule, try spending a day together with a child once a month. The next month, spend personal time with another child.

Kids love attention from their caregivers, so giving them one or two hours of undivided attention will be a memorable bonding experience for both you and your child.

  1. Get-to-know-you Activity

No one knows a child better than their parent, but as your child grows, he or she will develop new talents and interests.

Take time to see what is new in their life. Take your child out for a treat, just you and them, and talk about their interests. Ask them what they’re learning at school, who their best friends are, and what they want to be when they grow up.

Try sharing a little bit about yourself, too. You could talk about your hobbies or fun experiences you had as a kid.

This activity might be something you and your child decide to do for your “day together.”

  1. Learn a New Recipe

If your child is at the age where they’re learning to cook, this is a great activity to try with them. Pick out a new recipe together. This could be any recipe: breakfast, lunch, dinner or dessert.

As you cook, teach your child basic cooking terms that you find in the recipe.

  1. Library Day

Go to the library and pick out a few books. You can read them together at the library, or take them home, snuggle up in a blanket and read them together. Check out your local library for fun activities to do together.

  1. Nail Salon

Relax with your daughter at a nail salon. With this activity, you can take a load off and have the opportunity to talk and spend quality time with her.

  1. Parks and Play Areas

If your kids have a lot of energy, take them to a park! Here are a few of the parks and play areas in Cache Valley.

  1. Shopping Spree

Do you have a child in the pre-teen or teen years? Take them on a shopping spree! Set a budget for them, and take them out for a fun day of shopping.

This activity allows for a fun day with your kids, and gives you the opportunity to teach them about budgeting.

Try out one or more of these ideas and upload a photo of your activity to Facebook or Instagram with the hashtags #mommyandme and #cachevalleyfamilymag. We will pick one photo a week during the month of May, starting Wednesday, May 11, to feature on our Instagram page.
